Charles Perrault (1628 – 1703) was a French author and member of the French Academy. He laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from pre-existing folk tales. The best known of his tales include Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, The Sleeping Beauty and Bluebeard.

charlesA new edition of Little Red Riding Hood with color illustrations which normally costs $1.99 tops today’s Buffet.

Many of Perrault’s stories, which were rewritten by the Brothers Grimm, continue to be printed and have been adapted to opera, ballet (such as Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty), theater, and film (Disney).

The pilot episode of NBC’s Grimm reveals that the Red Riding Hood stories were inspired by historic attacks by blutbaden, werewolf-like beings who have a deeply ingrained bloodlust and a weakness for victims wearing red.

Little Red Riding Hood (Illustrated) (Fairy eBooks)

The classic fairy tale of Red Riding Hood with color illustrations by Walter Crane.

Little Red Riding Hood, also known as Little Red Cap or simply Red Riding Hood, is a European fairy tale about a young girl and a Big Bad Wolf. The story has been changed considerably in its history and subject to numerous modern adaptations and readings. The story was first published by Charles Perrault in 1697.

The story revolves around a girl called Little Red Riding Hood, after the red hooded cape/cloak (in Perrault’s fairytale) or simple cap (in the Grimms’ fairytale) she wears. The girl walks through the woods to deliver food to her sick grandmother.

A wolf wants to eat the girl but is afraid to do so in public. He approaches Little Red Riding Hood and she naïvely tells him where she is going. He suggests the girl pick some flowers, which she does. In the meantime, he goes to the grandmother’s house and gains entry by pretending to be the girl. He swallows the grandmother whole, (In some stories, he locks her in the closet), and waits for the girl, disguised as the grandma.
