Karen Fenech tops today’s Buffet with Imposter, the first installment in her popular “The Protectors” romantic suspense series.

karenKaren wrote her first book, Unholy Angels, over a two-year period in her spare time — in unlikely places such as checkout lines at stores and in doctor and dentist waiting rooms. While she was out running errands, she jotted down scenes for the story in a notebook she carried in her purse, then typed them up when she returned home. The book was published three years ago.

Writing novels had been Karen’s goal since she became hooked on Nancy Drew mysteries at age 10. She writes contemporary and historical romantic suspense novels, suspense-mystery novels, and short works of suspense.

Hazing Meri Sugarman

Poor, dear Cindy Bixby is a total loser. Has been all her life. But now as she enters college, Cindy hopes to shed her loser ways — get some friends and maybe even (dare she think it?) get a boyfriend. Her first move out of loserdom: pledge Alpha Beta Delta.

There Cindy meets Meri Sugarman. Meri is not only beautiful, she controls the sorority, a position that gives Meri more power than…well, maybe not God, but certainly any person within a one-hundred-mile radius. (How, you ask? Think of today’s technology and what you could do with it if you were so (illegally) inclined. Get the picture? 😉 )

Meri teaches Cindy that she, too, can be perfect. She can be beautiful, sexy, and popular, influence teachers and politicians, and even have a boyfriend!

But when the new Cindy crosses into Meri-only territory (hint: where there’s trouble, look for boy), new — very scary — Meri emerges. And Cindy realizes that behind all that beauty is an evil beast that must be stopped.

Theodore and Woodrow: How Two American Presidents Destroyed Constitutional Freedom

“Either the Constitution means what it says, or it doesn’t.”

America’s founding fathers saw freedom as a part of our nature to be protected—not to be usurped by the federal government—and so enshrined separation of powers and guarantees of freedom  in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. But a little over a hundred years after America’s founding, those God-given rights were laid siege by two presidents caring more about the advancement of progressive, redistributionist ideology than the principles on which America was founded.

Theodore and Woodrow is Judge Andrew P. Napolitano’s shocking historical account of how a Republican and a Democratic president oversaw the greatest shift in power in American history, from a land built on the belief that authority should be left to the individuals and the states to a bloated, far-reaching federal bureaucracy, continuing to grow and consume power each day.

Stealing the Preacher

But just when it seems God has answered her prayers, it turns out the parson is there against his will and has dreams of his own calling him elsewhere. VALIS

“Dick is one of the ten best American writers of the twentieth century, which is saying a lot. Dick was a kind of Kafka steeped in LSD and rage.”—Roberto Bolaño

What is VALIS? This question is at the heart of Philip K. Dick’s ground-breaking novel, and the first book in his defining trilogy. When a beam of pink light begins giving a schizophrenic man named Horselover Fat (who just might also be known as Philip K. Dick) visions of an alternate Earth where the Roman Empire still reigns, he must decide whether he is crazy, or whether a godlike entity is showing him the true nature of the world.

VALIS is essential reading for any true Philip K. Dick fan, a novel that Roberto Bolaño called “more disturbing than any novel by [Carson] McCullers.” By the end, like Dick himself, you will be left wondering what is real, what is fiction, and just what the price is for divine inspiration.

Wait Till Next Year: A Memoir

Set in the suburbs of New York in the 1950s, Wait Till Next Year is Doris Kearns Goodwin’s touching memoir of growing up in love with her family and baseball. She re-creates the postwar era, when the corner store was a place to share stories and neighborhoods were equally divided between Dodger, Giant, and Yankee fans.

We meet the people who most influenced Goodwin’s early life: her mother, who taught her the joy of books but whose debilitating illness left her housebound: and her father, who taught her the joy of baseball and to root for the Dodgers of Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, and Gil Hodges. Most important, Goodwin describes with eloquence how the Dodgers’ leaving Brooklyn in 1957, and the death of her mother soon after, marked both the end of an era and, for her, the end of childhood.
