Author Paula Wiseman is a former research chemist at Ashland Petroleum who turned to full-time writing after her first child was born. Her popular series of Christian-themed novels has consistently topped Amazon’s Hot New Releases list for Christian Fiction, and have won several awards for indie writers. Book 1, Contingency, tops today’s Buffet.
paula1The book and its sequels are for folks who enjoy character-driven family relationship stories with strong Christian themes, Paula told me yesterday.

“The characters wrestle with taking abstract faith issues like forgiveness and applying them to the host of challenges life deals us,” she said. “Most of my readers are women, but I do have some very enthusiastic male readers.”

A native of Ashland, Kentucky, Paula now lives in Robinson, Illinois, with her husband Jon (a safety engineer by day, and seminary student by night) and two daughters and son. She’s been writing since she was 11 years old, but was unpublished until she sold a children’s story to Highlights Magazine several years ago. At that point, she began to consider writing as a career, and began work on Contingency. In the meantime, she had several devotional pieces published in Cup of Comfort books and one in a Tyndale collection called Life Savors for Women.

She writes in the afternoon, using a jumbled outline with color-codes, circles, arrows and scribbles she uses after the story has taken shape.

“I’m not sure if the plotting and planning process ever stops, though,” Paula said. “I’ve gone back and made changes after an early-morning epiphany more than once. I have a few good friends who read for me and help me pound out the story in the early stages.”

Even though her former technical career might seem disconnected from fiction writing, Paula believes that the problem-solving and analytical skills she honed as a chemist have been great assets for writing, especially during the editing phase.

Paula believes she’s timed her writing career perfectly by publishing her indie books just as the eBook market exploded. “Another thing we did was to include a preview for the second book in the back of the first book, and then we released Indemnity just four months after Contingency. I think those moves helped us build a brand and following quickly.”

Christian Fiction
Author: Paula Wiseman
Contingency (Covenant of Trust)

Bobbi Molinsky’s comfortable life is shattered when a forwarded email from her husband’s account lands in her inbox. The email teases, “My whole evening is free again.”

After an angry confrontation with Chuck, she is left with the broken remains of an eighteen-year marriage. Where is God?

Bobbi agrees forgiving Chuck is the right thing, the God-honoring thing to do, but it leaves her empty and isolated. Teaching her second-graders is a burden. Taking care of her boys saps all her energy. It seems God Himself has walked away, leaving her to struggle alone.

Is God faithful? Bobbi can’t deny the transformation in Chuck, but genuine forgiveness requires trust, and trust is a risk she’s not willing to take. Can she let go of her deepest, most primal fears and save her marriage?
