Before her writing career blossomed, Linda Nichols was a full-time stay-at-home Mom while her husband pursued a law career. When her youngest child entered first grade, she joined a writing workshop at a nearby community college and began writing freelance articles for local parenting magazines.

nicholsWhile honing her craft, Linda wrote several “practice” novels but couldn’t manage to bring any of her stories to a conclusion. Finally, about 14 years ago, she realized her dream of becoming an author would never be realized until she finished a book, even if it was terrible. She began writing a romantic comedy, a departure for her. The plot involved a distraught young woman who pours out her heart to the man she thinks is her new therapist, but actually he’s the carpenter who is remodeling the psychologist’s office. Linda finished the book, Handyman, in six months and immediately wrote to nine agents. Four days later, she heard from agent Theresa Park, who sold the book and its film rights.

Linda turned to the Christian market with her next book, Not a Sparrow Falls, which tops today’s Buffet. The story revolves around Mary Bridget, who flees her Virginia hometown with a man who forces her into a life of crime. She eventually reports him to the police and strikes out on her own. Assuming a new identity, Bridie, the girl begins a new relationship. But when her previous lover is released from jail, he tracks her down, seeking vengeance. The writing is realistic and a tad racier than you might expect from a Christian novel.

Rex and the City: True Tales of a Rescue Dog Who Rescued a Relationship

Harrington shares her story of love, loss, dysfunctional relationships, and the shelter dog who put things right.

In 1997, Lee and her then-boyfriend Ed were on the verge of breaking up. Money was tight, their careers were floundering (Lee was an aspiring novelist: Ed was an aspiring documentary filmmaker) and their personalities, frankly, did not mix. Plus, they lived in a crumbling, cramped tenement apartment on the Lower East Side–for which they paid more than they earned. Then, on a fateful day in August , they decided on impulse to visit a nearby animal shelter, just to “look at” dogs. In a split-second decision that would change their lives, they brought home a troubled spaniel mix named Wallace.

Faced with a new responsibly, they bickered constantly, worried incessantly, cried daily (mostly Lee) and disagreed on nearly every aspect of how to handle the dog. Slowly but surely, that love helped transform both the dog and the relationship. And thus, by rescuing a needy spaniel, they ended up rescuing themselves.

The Catherine Kimbridge Chronicles #1, Inception

2067 was the year I died for the first time… It was painful. Had I known how often I’d be expected to die over the next several millennia, I might have made a stronger effort to stay dead. The year actually started off rather nice. I finished my PhD in high energy physics and was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in the United States Air Force. My first posting after the promotion was to the Lunar One Air Base where I worked with my father, Dr. Robert Kimbridge on “The Project.” Capable of a sustained point one G of acceleration, our prototype was expected to make the Mars run in less than a week. By the end of November the ESX Arizona was ready for her first trial runs and I was her pilot. History has an odd way of repeating itself.
