Another day, another overloaded table of great new Kindle freebies.

Today’s first pick continues a tradition I love to see — great mass-market paperbacks revived in Kindle format. Today, it’s Calculated Loss, a thriller by Linda L. Richards. In case you don’t recall, Richards was a real-life CIA operative who later founded January Magazine as an experiment in Web technologies supporting the nonfiction computer books she was writing then. She co-founded January in 1997 with her partner, photographer David Middleton. Nowadays, Linda lives on a small island near Vancouver, Canada.

Next up is a book with a publicity stunt so outrageous I’m compelled to mention it. The Boy Who Played With Dark Matter was written by … well, the author name given is “Holy Ghost Writer.” The mysterious identity of the author is part of an international contest, and the first person to solve the riddle wins $1,000. For clues, look in the Count of Monte Cristo sequels.

As usual, each book listed here has gone FREE within the past 24 hours (except for the “Kindle Daily Deals” on page 3). Warning: Kindle book promotions can end without notice, so before downloading click the link “See Kindle price at Amazon” to verify that the book is still free. (Prices and availability may differ outside USA.)
