The Dirty Parts of the Bible -- A Novel

The Dirty Parts of the Bible is a humorous novel set during the Great Depression—a rollicking tale of love and liquor, preachers and prostitutes, trains and treasure, sure to appeal to fans of Water for ElephantsO Brother Where Art Thou?, Mark Twain, and Johnny Cash….

“While the title suggests a raunchy read, this rich and soulful novel is actually a rather well-done bildungsroman [coming-of-age story] steeped in wanderlust and whimsy that at times recalls The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and at others a tamer On the Road. The story begins in 1936 as 19-year-old Tobias is thumbing his way from Remus, Mich., to his uncle’s farm in Glen Rose, Tex., to find a hidden bag of money, after his father, a Baptist pastor, drunkenly slams his car into the church and is removed from the parsonage. The author does an excellent job in making well-charted territory (riding the rails; scavenged campfire meals under the stars) seem vibrant and new. Snippets of scripture, Southern spirituals, and folk ballads lend context and flavor to the text. Most impressive are the jangly dialogue and the characters’ distinctive voices, which are authentic and earthy but not remotely hoary. When Tobias finally arrives at his uncle’s, the surprises that await him are more than enough to keep his–and readers’–interests piqued.” (Review from the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award)

Betty Kowalski isn’t looking forward to the holidays. She just can’t seem to find Christmas in her heart. There’s church, of course. But who can she bake for these days? And who would care whether or not she pulled out the Christmas decorations?

Her new neighbor just adds to the problem. He’s doing home improvements that don’t appear to be improving much of anything. These days when Betty looks out the window, she sees a beat-up truck, a pile of junk, lots of blue tarps, and–horror of horrors–an old pink toilet.

But when a mangy dog appears at her doorstep, the stage is set for Betty to learn a very important lesson about what Christmas is all about. This contemporary Christmas story is a timely yet gentle reminder that God can work miracles through something as seemingly insignificant as a little brown dog.

From Ghetto to Death Camp: A Memoir of Privilege and Luck

When German soldiers invaded the Polish city of Lodz at the start of World War II, they confined the local Jewish community to a miserable, overcrowded ghetto. Through family connections, a Jewish teenager named Anatol Chari became a ghetto policeman. Because they were sometimes viewed as collaborators, ghetto policemen who survived the war kept their past a secret. In From Ghetto to Death Camp, Chari reveals that hidden story, describing the policemen’s duties—guarding food, rounding up prisoners for transport—and the privileges it brought them. Those privileges ended when the ghetto population was transported to Auschwitz. As a slave laborer, Chari went on to various work camps, endured long marches and an Allied bombing raid, and ended up in the Bergen-Belsen death camp. To survive the camps, he now says, you needed help, smarts, and most of all luck. He depicts a seemingly senseless world where guards could be decent or cruel, where some prisoners were sent to hospitals and others to gas chambers, and where food was everything. Written with remarkable honesty and unexpected wit, this unique memoir is in many ways a reflection on the human condition.

The Quiet Assassin: Third Edition

Here is a truly original thriller, comparable to the very best of vintage Le Carré. It is set behind the Berlin Wall in the heart of the East German police state and it features one of the most unique and winning heroines since Lucy in Ken Follett’s Eye of the Needle. Her name is Käte Frassek, a resistance fighter since the age of eighteen, who over the course of twenty years leads a double life in her courageous campaign to rouse her countrymen to revolt against their repressive regime. She is a wife, a mother, a scientist, a lover… and an assassin. Against a backdrop of the Cold War in the 1960s, an abiding love develops between Käte, while still the young wife of an East German official, and an American physician innocent of who she is and what she is doing. In the remarkable climax to her years of plotting against the head of the State’s secret police, she finally must risk not only her own life but her son’s and lover’s as well.

The Living Light (Knight of Ages)

“This is going to be difficult for you to understand but it’s going to be even harder for you to believe. I do not even know where to begin, but you need to at least know the basics. Fairytales are real, monsters are real. Everything you’ve ever heard about magic, mythical creatures, and the supernatural is all true. It exists in a world beyond the one you see out your window, and it’s where your parents came from. It’s where you came from and we need you to come back.”

When Nero Cassidy first heard these words, he could not believe his ears. After all, he was a normal teenager living in a normal city in America. But after only one week from hearing these words, Nero had battled nightmarish creatures, had befriended a little girl with the ability to appear and disappear at will, and had nearly been eaten by a carnivorous flower. It was enough for him to know that the yellow-eyed man, Soto, had not been lying.

Now Nero just hopes that Soto is mistaken about everything else, because if Soto is correct and Nero is the “Living Light,” Nero’s path will never be normal again.

Teaching with Khan Academy: Biology (A curriculum guide to Teaching Biology with Khan Academy)

This Biology guide covers the California high school standards (Standards can be found online). However, it can also be used for junior high school. I do use text books and other resources as well. Certain areas of the state standards weren’t completely covered by Khan Academy. But, for most of the areas required to be covered, Khan Academy does a wonderful job of explaining the concepts. I have also included other online resources I used.

I put the sequence of lessons in an order that I thought was progressive. That way, as the lessons went on the vocabulary was repeated and some concepts already covered. I found evolution to be the easiest theme to start with to get us on our way. It introduces so much vocabulary and just an overall view of biology before we start to look closer into each area. So the order is not necessarily as the standards are listed in the California Standards guide.
