Love is a Wounded Soldier

Love is a Wounded Soldier

Product Description

Despite growing up with an abusive, alcoholic father, and having to cope with the untimely death of his mother, Robert Mattox has retained his innocence and idealism. He woos and marries his first love, Ellen, and it appears his life is set for a happily-ever-after ending.
But World War II is raging, and its vortex snatches him away from his young bride. He finds himself fighting in Europe, witnessing and participating in the unspeakable ugliness and brutality of war. His love for Ellen holds him back from utter despondency, and his will to fight and live draws strength from his desire to return home to her.
When he finally does return home to Kentucky, he’s exhausted, jaded, and scarred—inside and out. His worst fear is how Ellen will respond to the changes in him, but when he gets home he finds that Ellen is different, too—much different.
Can things between them ever be the same again? Or will their love be the war’s most tragic casualty?

The Last Jump: A Novel of World War II

The Last Jump: A Novel of World War II

Product Description

The Last Jump is a story of discovery as a modern day journalist explores the military experience of his father in World War II. Aware of the existence of a long lost family secret, our protagonist enlists the aid of four aging World War II veterans who knew his father. When he finds out they know about the secret and have sworn an oath never to reveal it, he begins the difficult task of carefully cajoling the information from men he considers to be true heroes. His odyssey takes him back in time to a country vexed with racial and gender issues but united as never before or since.

After the last veteran passes away, his hopes are dashed but one reaches from beyond the grave to identify the only other living person who who knows the secret and he races against death to reach her. A shocking conclusion awaits him, if only he can get there in time!

This book resonates with veterans of all wars and their sons and daughters. Active military and patriotic supporters of our Armed Forces also love this book, especially fans of Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan.

A historical fiction book requires significant research to understand the personalities of the famous participants and the location of various units and the timeframe in which the action is taking place. The challenge is to seamlessly place the fictional characters in historically accurate situations and venues to tell the story. As such, it took 4 years to write this book and a year to edit it.

As part of the research, we met and talked to numerous World War II veterans. They are almost universally humble, modest and appreciative of the gratitude so generously expressed by many, in both America and Europe, so late in their lives. So, come and join the adventure as we take a trip through a time in this country when everyone pulled together to achieve the improbable victory against the forces of evil. Learn what it was like to live in and fight for America in the dark days of World War II and enjoy a rousing war story and an elusive mystery. We have much to learn from that generation. The Last Jump teaches us some of it. And keeping their memory alive is something they earned.

Some proceeds from the sales of The Last Jump are donated to assist families of the fallen.

The Kindness of Strangers: Penniless Across America

The Kindness of Strangers: Penniless Across America

Product Description

A Wall Street Journal bestseller and featured on Oprah. One man's journey from coast to coast. No promises. No guarantees. And no money.

What would you do if you had to journey penniless across America, depending only on the kindness of those you met along the way? If you're Mike McIntyre, you might meet...

A biker-turned-minister who shares faith, food, and self-defense tips with a stranger on the road...

A lady firefighter who used to be a man...

A lonely woman who offers a place to spend the night, and in the morning feels the loss of yet another man who leaves her...

Stuck in a job he no longer found fulfilling, journalist Mike McIntyre felt his life was quickly passing him by. So one day he hit the road to trek from one end of the country to the other with little more than the clothes on his back and without a single penny in his pocket.

Through his travels, he found varying degrees of kindness in strangers from all walks of life--and discovered more about people and values and life on the road in America than he'd ever thought possible.

The gifts of food and shelter he received along the way were outweighed only by the touching gifts of the heart--the willingness of many he met to welcome a lonely stranger into their homes...and the discovery that sometimes those who give the most are the ones with the least to spare.

"A truly heartening book, one that restores one's faith not just in the road, but in the openness and humanity of the people of this country."--Salon

"A superb writer...Something about McIntyre and his quest makes people want to feed him, pray for him, reveal their innermost torments to him."--Los Angeles Times

"Captivating."--San Jose Mercury News

"An incredible journey."--CBS News

Amazon.com Review

A road-trip and self-discovery book with a difference: McIntyre hitchhiked across America with no money, accepting only the "kindness of strangers"--rides, food, shelter, and the occasional beer. This book grew on me with every page, just as McIntyre's feelings for the ordinary people he met grew with every mile. Few books I've read since Studs Terkel's Hard Times (a classic oral history about the Great Depression) so effectively captured the day-to-day lives of typical Middle Americans, with all their strengths and weaknesses. Highly Recommended.

The Hidden Legacy of World War II

The Hidden Legacy of World War II

Product Description

Daughters, fathers and war – three words seldom used together. In "The Hidden Legacy of World War II: A Daughter’s Journey of Discovery", Carol Schultz Vento weaves life with her paratrooper father into the larger narrative of World War II and the homecoming of the Greatest Generation. The book describes the seldom told story of how the war trauma of World War II impacted one family. This personal story is combined with the author’s thorough research and investigation of the reality for those World War II veterans who could not forget the horrors of war. This nonfiction work fills in the missing pieces of the commonly accepted societal view of World War II veterans as stoic and unwavering, a true but incomplete portrait of that generation of warrior.

Midwife : Liza

Midwife : Liza

Product Description

The year is 1339. Liza’s midwifery skills are needed by the inhabitants of Hollingham. Knowing this keeps the lonely old woman going, together with the occasional ‘trip’ to her long dead husband and children. But she makes one mistake, and the villagers begin to suspect she is using occult spells to harm them. She tries desperately to regain their trust, but time is running short. Rosalind, rich, lonely and naïve, wants to experience true love and falls in love with a monk, by whom she conceives a child. Liza and the Lady Isabella, Rosalind’s mother, must pick up the pieces. None of the three women will ever be the same again.

LIZA is the first book in the MIDWIFE series, which tells the story of midwives, women and childbirth in England from medieval to modern times.

Author's note - This book was previously titled 'MIDWYF: LISA'. The cover still contains the old title because I like the medieval spelling, but the 'official' title brings the book into line with the series.
MIDWIFE: BEATRIX, set in Hollingham and London in the 1630s, is due to be published early 2013.

Valerie Levy holds a PhD in Midwifery Studies from the University of Sheffield. She has published in many professional, peer reviewed journals, and co-edited the ‘Midwifery Practice’ series of textbooks, which are still in use worldwide. Now retired, Valerie lives in France with her husband.

Book 1 in the Task Force 125 Series

In the war on terror...sometimes the best weapon is a woman...

Sarah Stevens is a washed-up military cop whose life is a shambles until she is offered a position as a paramilitary agent with the CIA's Special Activities Division.
The thirty-year-old, overweight, down-on-her-luck Stevens goes to a secret training camp where she is transformed into a sexy and deadly agent whose mission is to stop, by any means possible, the financiers of terrorism against the United States and its allies.
Sarah soon discovers that this is an exciting new life loaded with adventure, danger and undeniable temptations…

I have to say THE PATH TO FREEDOM is one genuinely impressive read.

I loved Sarah's gung ho attitude and her determination to reinvent herself and there's no doubt in my mind that she's wholly successful in achieving that goal. Vince has issues of his own - both personally and professionally - and Sarah's ability to stand up to him is a huge turn on for him. One of the things I especially enjoyed about this story was the closeness of the members of Task Force 125. There's a genuine caring and `openness' that's extended to Sarah and really says a lot about this group. Lisa Pietsch infuses this story with humor, lots of action, friendship, romance and suspense so that you're pulled into these characters lives and don't want to let them go. Fortunately Ms. Pietsch is working on more stories for both Sarah and her fellow `fat camp' roomy' Tracey Ballentine so I'll be anxious to revisit them both and find out just where their adventures have taken them.

Caged: Memoirs of a Cage-Fighting Poet

Product Description

Accomplished MMA fighter and award-winning writer Cameron Conaway presents in Caged the true story of a young man who overcomes a family background and his own inner torment by learning to channel his frustrations into the physical world of mixed martial arts fighting and the cerebral world of poetry and writing. It teaches the value of personal reflection, how life's most painful moments can lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of human nature, and just what is possible when optimism and determination combine to overcome tough odds. Caged shows how the pursuit of two seemingly disparate passions helped a struggling boy blossom into a simple man. The result is a literary and lyrical philosophical journey into the heart and mind of a modern-day warrior.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY: "A promising style and interesting premise elevate this novel about a historic moment in abortion law."

When 21-year-old Jessica, adopted by former nurse Rose, learns she was born in secret to an anesthetized woman who thought she was undergoing an abortion, she sets off on a journey to learn the truth of her origins. Courtroom dramas ensue, with her troubled biological mother and endearing father, along with Rose, fighting to reconcile the past, find healing, and control the explosive results of the long-buried truth. -PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

ABNA Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Expert Reviewer says, "The storyline is sure and involving. The author has packed a lot of information in a small amount of space, but it doesn't feel forced or crowded...", "very very strong..." and "written well, not surprising given the author's credentials."

Novel Description:
As an adopted child, college student Jessica Walters had often pondered her true beginnings. Her most creatively imagined scenarios, however, had not come close to the truth revealed to her on her twenty-first birthday: Jessica’s biological mother had aborted her.

In ONLY WOMEN BLEED, Jessica Walters learns that she is one of four fetuses to have survived late-term abortion procedures due to the efforts of a small conspiracy of medical professionals, including her beloved aunt, Rose. In the harrowing months following this life-altering news, Jessica must learn to find her own way, her first test being the death of her dear aunt and the responsibility of caring for the mentally disabled son that Rose leaves behind.

Jessica’s increasing curiosity about her biological parents soon leads to a chance meeting that again alters her life’s course. As the truth about the abortees becomes public knowledge, Jessica finds herself far removed from the simple life she had once known, and on the run from the media and the anonymous threats being made against her. A violent confrontation with the unlikely source of those threats, along with the discovery of yet another shocking truth from the past, threaten to sever her increasingly tenuous grip on sanity.

L.J. Rivard began law school in 2007 and discovered that the casebooks which were required reading were also wonderful troves of ideas for interesting stories. Rivard is married with two children, holds a B.S. in psychology, a J.D., and is a licensed attorney.

She has no choice in the matter. The Corrupted are everywhere, and only Alice can see them for what they truly are.

Weepy the Dragon

Weepy the Dragon

Product Description

Weepy is a dragon, sure, but the dragons nearby would agree that he doesn't act like a dragon at all. He's not angry, scary, and mean. He only eats vegetables with his sharp teeth. He uses his fire-breath as a nightlight because he's afraid of the dark. Worst of all, he tends to cry, something the other dragons - especially his powerful father - would never do! Weepy wants to be more "dragony," but he soon finds that being different has its advantages.

"...Weepy's story will encourage and motivate young readers to accept themselves for who they are and be themselves instead of trying to copy others and become like them... It is a good story for tutors and parents to use for storytelling sessions in classrooms and in homes because of the concept and positive message conveyed through the tale of Weepy the Dragon."

Hope in Hungnam: A Novel of the Korean War

Hope in Hungnam: A Novel of the Korean War

Product Description

Hope in Hungnam takes place during the darkest days of the Korean War in 1950: from the brutal Battle of Chosin Reservoir to the stunning Christmas Eve evacuation of 100,000 civilians from Hungnam, North Korea. As the flames of war engulf the Korean Peninsula, US Marine Jack Stiles desperately searches for meaning in the frozen killing fields of North Korea. Bloodied by war and bigotry, Stiles’ world is changed forever when he is critically wounded at Chosin Reservoir and left for dead. Nursed back to health by a mortal foe, he soon faces the realities of war, life, and love with new clarity. Hope in Hungnam tells the story of the woman who saved him, the Captain who saved them all, and the ship that did the impossible. In his riveting debut novel, David Watts weaves an epic tale of the men who fought, the men who died, and those who risked all in the most remarkable, yet almost unknown naval evacuation in all of human history. It is a story of war and hate, of love and forgiveness, but most importantly it is a gripping story of the enduring power of hope.

Praise for The Raie'Chaelia

"Douthit’s love of words is apparent and her use of language highly inventive. She has a firm grip on believable dialogue."
~ Kirkus Reviews

“This was SUCH an epic fantasy. I haven’t read fantasies for a while, and I’m glad to come back to them. I was taken to the worlds of the author’s imagination and I felt that same “childhood” feeling I’ve felt while reading countless fantasy books, such as C.S. Lewis’ and J.R.R. Tolkein. This story was so original! Loved everything about it. I fell in love with the characters, the setting was INCREDIBLE, and the background story was so magical. You immediately get pulled in by the mystery and the curious feeling you get that there’s more to this story…”
~ Rabiah, Confessions of a Readaholic

“The main character, Chalice, was very likable. I felt like I really knew her, which is always a good thing. The plot, if broken down to the bare bones of it, was rather like Graceling, and Chalice, I thought, was like Katsa when she fought. I found this a good thing, since I loved Graceling and ended up enjoying this book as well. Readers of fantasy will love this story.”
~ Rida, Raindrop Reflections

“The Raie’Chaelia has a brilliant storyline. I tried to savor each and every word that came off the page. The descriptions weren’t too over the top for me. You could practically imagine almost the whole thing. The characters were so easy to love. Chalice quickly earned my respect, with her amazing skill to swiftly take down enemies. My eyes didn’t even close to blink. Excuse me as I let them rest for a moment.”
~ Suzanne and Lucky, Cup of Tea Reviews

“This is a beautifully written story. Melissa Douthit must be a wordsmith! She weaves the language in such a way that the reader is enthralled by the story. This is original and unique in a world where sometimes stories can seem similar. Her world building skills are incredible leaving us with fascinating scenes that come alive from the pages. Her characters are the stuff a person wants to be made of: clever, brave, strong, honorable, driven, loyal, and loving.”
~ Beverly, The Wormhole

2060: The Peacekeeper (A Dystopian Thriller)

Product Description

In the overcrowded, noisy and sweltering streets of New York, in the year 2060, paranoia, fear and poverty are everywhere. An energy crisis paved the way for a new political party that promised to solve the country’s problems. However, this administration quickly began enforcing dictatorial legislation that left anyone who opposed the government outcast from society; unable to get a job, cut off from the power and forced to survive on the streets.

Unsurprisingly, this led to riots and eventually, to the emergence of underground rebel factions. It’s the job of a task force known as the PeaceKeepers to bring these rebels to justice. Heller was one of the first recruited to the new department, but what he’d once idealistically seen as a worthy cause becomes a bitter pill to swallow when he is forced to shoot and kill an old college friend, Matthew Ballow, in the line of duty.

Now, Heller must find out about Ballow’s connection to the rebels and, more importantly, learn why he was prepared to risk his life for the cause. His job becomes that much more difficult when he meets a beautiful young journalist who is reporting on the case.
