Rudyard Kipling, a major innovator in the art of the short story, is best known for The Jungle Book<\/em> and Just So Stories<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"kip\"<\/a>“Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” is a short story that appears in The Jungle Book<\/em>\u00a0about the adventures of a valiant young mongoose, and it tops today’s Buffet.<\/p>\n

The story, notable for its frightening and serious tone, was adapted into an animated TV special by American animator Chuck Jones in 1975. The story follows a 19th-century English family and their discovery of a young mongoose half-drowned from a flood. They revive it and decide to keep it as a pet. The young mongoose, named Rikki Tikki Tavi, finds himself confronted by two dangerous king cobras, Nag and his even more dangerous wife Nagaina, who had the run of the garden while the house was unoccupied.<\/p>\n

Kipling was born in Bombay and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. He became one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1907 he won the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the award, and to date he remains the youngest recipient.<\/p>\n
