The iconic vampire novel Dracula<\/em> has consistently been one of the most frequently downloaded eBooks, even before the advent of the Kindle. Because the 1897 horror story was out of copyright, it was freely available, often in crudely formatted text files. But its popularity has never waned, thanks partly to the book’s continual revival in film and popular culture.<\/p>\n

\"stoker\"<\/a>At the top of today’s Buffet is an edition made especially for the Kindle that includes several detailed maps and historical illustrations, along with author Bram Stoker’s short story, Dracula’s Guest. Normally this edition costs $1.99, but today it’s free.<\/p>\n

The tale begins with solicitor Jonathan Harker journeying by train and carriage from England to Count Dracula’s crumbling, remote castle. His mission is to provide legal support to Dracula for a real estate transaction. At first enticed by Dracula’s gracious manner, Harker soon discovers that he has become a prisoner in the castle. One night while searching for a way out, and against Dracula’s strict admonition not to venture outside his room at night, Harker falls under the spell of three wanton female vampires, “the Sisters.”<\/p>\n

Stoker was an Irish novelist and short story writer who was best known during his lifetime as the personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and manager of London’s Lyceum Theatre, which Irving owned.<\/p>\n

The original 541-page manuscript was long believed lost, but was found in a barn in Pennsylvania in the early 1980s. The typewritten pages had numerous corrections, and handwritten at the top was an alternate title, “THE UN-DEAD.” The document was purchased by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Stoker’s original research notes are displayed in the Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n
