Mary Shelley (1797 \u2013 1851) was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein<\/em>, which tops today’s Buffet.<\/p>\n

\"shelley\"<\/a>Shelley started writing Frankenstein<\/em> when she was 18, and the novel was published when she was 20. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley’s name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823.\u00a0Frankenstein<\/em> is infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement and is also considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction.<\/p>\n

Shelley was born Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin in Somers Town, London, in 1797. She was the second child of the feminist philosopher, educator, and writer Mary Wollstonecraft, and the first child of the philosopher, novelist, and journalist William Godwin.<\/p>\n
