Writer complains of ‘book gang’ terrorizing Goodwill outlet

The Amazon seller’s board tipped me off to this blog post on LiveJournal. The writer claims that a gang is hoarding books and assaulting shoppers at Goodwill Outlet stores in Seattle and Everett, Wash., and that Goodwill isn’t doing anything about it. The writer is anonymous, but there are so many details you wonder if it’s for real:

… an Amazon.com seller located in Portland, Oregon, has been daily monopolizing and loitering at the Goodwill Outlet stores in Seattle and Everett. They have assaulted and threatened me and other people. In 2010 the gang caused many violent incidents and there were multiple police calls due to them. Their “shopping technique” is referred to as “hoarding” or “scooping”. They aggressively grab and hoard books (about 80 percent of everything), taking as much of the newly set out offerings as possible, filling up their personal bins as quickly as possible, in order to prevent other customers from buying anything of value before them. The gang wants to scan the barcodes to decide which items to buy, but doesn’t want anyone else to get them first. When hoarding the books, they shove and hit people with books they throw, but they have also committed more serious assaults, and have verbally threatened people. They show up en masse in order to monopolize the stores. It is obvious to any normal person that this behavior is abusive, but apparently not to the Seattle Goodwill management. The fundamental problem is Seattle Goodwill itself. They are permitting this group to do what they are doing.

    Hum.

I always thought of book selling as a gentle profession. Maybe Nicholas Basbane, author of “Among the Gently Mad,” can do a follow on book titled “Lunatic Fringe of the Book Selling World.”

One person got a bit hostile with my granddaughter using my scanner at an FOL sale here.

Another time I accidentally bumped a woman in a narrow aisle at an FOL as I passed buy with a box of books. A male associate of the woman asked her sternly, “Was that deliberate?” to which the woman responded angrily, “No it wasn’t.”

One FOL here started charging extra for those who show up with scanners.

I am trying to figure out how to attach a smaller less conspicuous blue tooth device to my DELL PDA from A Seller Tool.

This posting made me think. I have been to some book sales in the last couple of years where people with scanners quickly scoop up all of the best-looking books into a pile (just for themselves) and then set to it with their scanners. It’s more of a race than anything with them. I see booksellers in places I never saw them before this year, and yes – many with scanners in hand.

A few scanner-wielding people in the last couple of years have put themselves squarely in a section and won’t let others see it until they are entirely finished. They try to block other buyers from seeing the books they may want. I think this is an unfair advantage, and pushy. Like you, I am used to people being more polite than that in the past. Sometimes I take a book out of a section to look at anyway, but it’s sort of intimidating to me to do that.

I haven’t tried a scanner yet, but if I ever do, I will slow down, and share the looking and bookfinding with the other people at the sale if I can, because to me it’s not just about the money, it’s about the adventure and fun, too.

We have seen these pushy shopper at goodwills here. They race in as the store opens, block the new book bins, grab all they can and throw it in their carts. Then block the way as they scan, then throw the rejects back into the bin. Very unpleasant. I think these are greedy people who have no idea that they are in BUSINESS and that behavior will hurt them in the long run.

I have been intimidated by this very same gang at another Goodwill in Seattle – they sometimes show up at the Seattle Library sales with a tall ugly red headed white dude who is some kind of in-law of theirs. The post is somewhat in error – they’ve been around a lot longer than 2010. I wrote about them here in 2007:
    http://www.amazonsellercommunity.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=141954&start=0&tstart=0

I did manage to trace them down, and yes, I came up with the same addresses as the blog writer. He’s absolutely right about them being here illegally – they are getting by in the underground economy thru online book sales and by use of intimidation. They will probably be at the next Seattle Public Library sale in April.

    Old news

I won;t go into here but there are classic sleazy behaviror with or without gangs or scanners.

    At scheduled non-Thrift sales:

My “will take” pile with a winter coat and hat on top of it – being looked through
SOLUTION: I bought a mixed set of BELLS – I put a couple in my coat that will easily dislodge. A tried signs “SOLD” DO NOT TOUCH” – ignored

“Can I look at that” They will hold the book and stare at it for 5 minutes without opening it [like a statue] – They are waiting for me or another to walk away so they can walk away with it – war of wills – Experienced Twice – JUST SAY NO – ANGRILY

Unfortunately – if you behave like an animal -everyone will steer clear – That’s what you want

I think with the economy becoming what it is, this sort of non-book person book buyer will become more common. These are not your granny’s bookseller, but those who are aggressively trying to get some either a) extra cash beyond Public Assistance, or b) those who truly do live on this income (they become more aggressive because the more you can grab of the ‘good stuff,’ the more you can eat or pay the rent. THANK GAWD, most of them are not into books but into other reseller items that make more money (you must admit with the online fees, we often only make pennies on the dollar), but books are often easy to acquire, many for free from people who just want to clear out their homes, so bookselling is becoming more common.

THIS is what I see happening, though. Don’t freak too much if you can help it. They aren’t book people. This means they have no idea what a book buyer is looking for in regard to condition. Everything is a nice looking or good looking book. Even smelly, torn books.

They sell them online to dissatisfied customers. Eventually, they go out of business, although they can return under other names.

As for the bullying. Contact your main headquarters of the Goodwill. Tell them to send someone to check it out (undercover of course), and maybe you can hoe out this ‘gang.’

Here on the east coast, we have some of these folks, and I’m sorry but those scanners ARE annoying. That boxing out (is what we call it here), putting boxes of books around an area of higher end text books is often frowned on.

At a local college library, after the boxers left, I spoke with one of the workers. The next year they moved some of the books to a new location, but mostly the looked out for this. The last three sales, the boxing ‘family,’ (yes, they were a religious group family) wasn’t there! sweet.

G’luck. And remember, if you see yourself and your scanner in any of this, know that you won’t be popular either.

FOL sales used to be a gold mine. No longer. Have seen this behavior for years at FOL sales. Many of these rude people are newbies who go for volume. Some disappear over time only to be replaced by others. FOL sales have become like midnight sales at Walmart around Christmas time. With some charging upwards of $30 to get in the door, or long lines forming an hour before the doors open it has become a waste of time to attend. If you are not one of the first few in the door you’re out of luck….

All the Goodwills in our area have junky books which Goodwill has already culled the valuable books to sell online or either has an arrangement with BetterWorldBooks. Have seen several local Goodwill stores close , as they were no longer profitable so HQ consolidated, or carried little to no items of value for people to resell.

With the technology and limited markets (not to mention the trends), it’s only a matter of time before all Goodwills, libraries, estate salerers, yard salers, used bookstores sell all their valuable books online and sell their dregs locally. Get used to it. That fact is not magically going away. Sure, you may find a few gems that are pre-ISBNs but the wild west days of bookselling for the small fry are over.

I live in the Tacoma area and have not observed this behaviour. What you need to do is call the police if somebody is causing a problem at the store. This sounds like one gang that needs to be stopped and banned from book sales. This can be done through the courts. Goodwill in my area rarely has any books I can resell at a profit any more. FOL sales are better. but not much.

I’ve seen a load of book scanners at the last Pratt Central Library sale. Yes, they do take boxes (and boxes) of books to scan. They do block the aisles in particular areas. I don’t have a scanner (maybe I will get one) but I try to suss out the books by the subject. I started selling on Amazon to get rid of my books, so I do read books.

The laugh is I scored a major book (old, no bar code) while the scanners around me were checking out stuff they shouldn’t have bothered with – if there’s 15 copies of the book at the library sale, chances are good it will be worthless.

    Hi,

I think aggressive behavior is out of place in a retail establishment of any kind.

A scanner, used with discretion and courtesy, can reduce risk and improve profit.

Turning a Friends of the Library event into something unfriendly is disturbing.

I love books. Not sure I qualify as a book person though. I picture a book person as someone who really knows antiquarian books.

I do not limit my purchases only to what I scan. Just scanning like a robot would take all the fun out of buying.

Regarding the post by Alia, stating that the gang was present before 2010, being run by a big ugly red-haired guy… I have seen hispanic book gangs in thrift stores before 2010, but around January 2010 is when hispanic gangs first started hoarding books in the Seattle and Everett Goodwill Outlets. I was not sure if the outlet book hoarders and the earlier book scanners were working for the same company. Carlos Reynaud was personally running the outlet hoarders in 2010 at the Seattle and Everett Goodwill Outlets, so that connects them to him. I have never seen the red-haired guy as far as I know. Who is he? Is he affiliated with Carlos?

Carlos’s brother Pedro has had the West Portland area (Hillsboro) and has used the exact same tactics. This blog appears to be 100% accurate from what I have witnessed since around 2003. Goodwill is probably even more corrupt in Oregon. They raised the book prices for worthless books that had supposedly all been scanned for their site to $1.00-2.00 so Carlos was Seattle bound for the cheaper prices and better quality — after they ruined the business for LOTS of legitimate book dealers! Pedro has been in and out of jail and is scheduled for another hearing on his immigration sometime this year. He appealed his return to Honduras seeking political asylym in the US! There is real danger within this group– be careful.

you have no idea how quick the police are to arrest anyone who is american. they dont give a shit about anything but saving their own asses

This West coast group of illegals may be working their way to your area next — so please be aware and don’t think it can’t happen to you. They are very dangerous. Goodwill should have stopped this when it first started but instead pretended there wasn’t a problem — that it was RACISM on the part of those who complained about the bad behavior. I have heard that there has been a shake up in management at Portland Goodwills so maybe there is finally just a little reality there. If they made their management at the AS IS outlets take lie detector tests it would be interesting to see where it would go. They just stood back and let this gang abuse their long time customers and kept FILES on the customers that COMPLAINED! Brad’s management practice was that the person who complains is equally at fault no matter the circumstances. If someone was to complain back in 2005 or so they would also get thrown out for the rest of the day along with the bullying jerk. I witnessed this for years and chose to leave the area as I feared what would happen next. The gang’s employees are assigned “targets” to get rid of in whatever manner is necessary. Yes, they are successful in this depleting of the competition as a lot of us that are not combat ready just couldn’t keep going into that environment. I thought I would have a heart attack I would be so angry at what they were doing. They wanted it ALL and just the fact that you were there was reason enough for them to stick to you like glue and take everything in your reach before you had a chance. What do you folks know about contacting those who have been pushed out by these gangs and Goodwills mis-management? At this time it might be possible to put together a powerful case against both groups for racketeering. This could be a class action suit that would include those damaged in both Oregon and Washington. There are probably at least 20+ in the Portland area that got out of the business due to this — and it sounds like Seattle has been equally effected. I have a lot of first name and faces in my memory but not sure how to re-connect with these people for a large class action lawsuit. If the rumors of corruptness by Goodwill employees, including management, this could be huge.

Have you checked Carlos’s Amazon inventory lately? He did have around 11,000 listed and now it is down to around 7,700 but now EVERY listing is priced at $875. Serious — take a look and then complain to Amazon that they allow this corrupt seller to remain on Amazon! March right on over in masses to Amazon’s corporate offices with all the information you can gather and demand that they turn off his sites and any he might open in the future. Link to his site–

you had the street address of the illegals who have taken over the everett store.
they could be reported to the department of revenue of washington state. The dor will come to your front door checking out reports, I know because I know someone who was reported.
yes, arent they but they are too dumb to check everywhere . they are focusing on the one place they know you post. I think its good to keep posting there just because it upsets them so much.
I am also writing down books tonight that I can check on later- randomly so he wont know which ones.
I am really glad you got pissed enough to fight back. In Oregon , almost everyone just gave up and let him take over. same story all over oregon .
We were very niave in the beginning- the illegals had just come into our state and no one knew what to do or what was up. It took me days just to find the address for ICE to report them.
the fact that he has raised his prices means he is very stressed and thats good.

I think its good to keep humilating Goodwill on craigslist. People read it – when I reported stuff about them in Oregon , everyone knew about it.
raising the prices of books punished Americans and frankly the Hillsboro outlet was like a mexican ghetto. as a matter of fact, illegal mexicans seem to think Goodwill was invented for them and they have taken over the regular goodwills in the washington county area.

Over a year ago I know that around 20 pages of Pedro’s listings were sent to Amazon’s legal dept. complaining about hundreds of infractons of the rules and NOTHING ever happened from that. The most blatant was listing the run of the mill books that were selling for $4 and under for $89.95 listing them as COLLECTIBLE for NO REASON. He was making up a lot of new listings instead of using the ISBN to list in hopes that some idiots would only see his $89.95 listings and not the same book listed under ISBN that started at 1c. Where is Pedro these days? Because of the stalking conviction the Hillsboro judge said he couldn’t go into Hillsboro Goodwill when the person was there that had charged him— but BRAD had said he had no problem with Pedro and that he was welcome back anytime as far as he was concerned. What kind of actions do you think would be the proper retaliation to put on Goodwill for what they did to all of us???? I would love to see a lot of those management get just what they deserve for turning over America to these illegals. There’s still a lot more of this story that needs to be dug up. Something to work on– why do you think management was so willing to throw us over the bridge for these thugs? There were some of us that guaranteed Hillsboro that whatever the gang was buying in books would be bought by the rest of us — they were not buying anything that we wouldn’t be buying if we had the opportunity. Brett was the only one that was sympathetic to our plight and would listen but he had no power. I also comforted Mark in Milwaukie around 2005 or 2006 as he had just had multiple complaints of physical assaults ( Carlos’s teen-age son mainly) but Mark replied there was NO PROBLEM at that store. There were runors that their legal dept. had advised them to just let it go on as they didn’t want headlines of RACISM! Carlos’s wife would go around giving evil looks trying to scare us away and tried to have the daughter follow us around the store. She’s older now, but wasn’t it breaking child labor lawsto have that kid there for up to 10-12 hours. We need to unite Portland and Seattle victims of these gangs and get some justice.

thanks. The IRS part puzzles me though as I know they were turned in to that agency way back and it appears nothing was done about it. At that time Pedro had bragged to the police about how he was making around $300K a year and how his brother at the other side of town was making over 1/2M a year. It appeared the two brothers were working independently for a quite a few years and were competitive with each other. The half-sister Maria that used to be in Hillsboro was arrested on identity theft and deported. Has anyone seen her back in US? I heard she had been living with Pedro at the time.

Jack I heard his bail was 10,000 I think we need to go after Pedro now!!! Carlos is over with,Goodwill takes from the Americans and gives to the gang of mexs. If everyone stopped giving them good stuff. The way I see it get them both thrown off Amazon and then there is no problem, No more account no more Carlos and Pedro, Look what they are out now( Carlos no money for over a week) Now with all the stuff on google about Carlos(I bet hes not sleeping well) Now its Pedros turn, keep up the good work everyone, So maybe next time you all go to the Goodwill or a fol sale they wont be there, They only thing to do is keep up on the IRS and DOR and get the word out and Craigs List.

If you do a Hillsboro City Search thing on the internet for books it would bring up a picture of Pedro’s warehouse space on TV hwy. Books-For-Everybody. I’m not sure it is still on there. It’s in the business park kind of behind the 7-11 at 219th-Cornelius Pass Rd. He did have a big fancy black SUV.

if we are also going to take on pedro , shouldnt we contact ICE and his parole officer- in other words we are going to need his case number for his conviction.
they are all peas in a pod- including those orc-like midgets who work for them

Does anybody have any photos of Pedro? There was supposed to be a photo in the Eugene Register/Guard newspaper back in 2006, but the archive only has the text of the old article, not the photo.

Pedro Reynaud was arrested for violation of a court Stalking Order, then found to be in possession of five stolen guns. The guns, ammunition and many other stolen items were found by the police in Pedro’s apartment. All the items were reported lost in three Portland area burglaries. He was charged with the stolen firearms (which he told police he got from a Goodwill employee), but got off on the charges, since the City of Hillsboro police executed an illegal search of Pedro’s home. Pedro was in and out of jail a few times and is now free to roam our neighborhoods. He still maintains his book business out of a warehouse at Park 219, 2900 SW Cornelius Pass Road, Hillsboro, OR. His Amazon book site is Booksforeverybody.com. ICE has thus far not deported him, awaiting another hearing in a year or two. If Hillsboro police had done their job properly, this illegal Honduran gangster would be in jail and then deported! His case is ongoing, so if anyone reading this has been attacked or threatened by him or his hired “crew” in the past few years, please post your experience. Pedro Reynaud’s cases are available in Washington County records and at the City of Hillsboro closed case files. Carlos and Pedro’s sister was also arrested during the bust for violation of the Stalking Order against Pedro. She was found with a stolen credit card, plead guilty and agreed to deportation. She had been working inside the Hillsboro Goodwill store with Pedro’s gang and was reported to management for harrassing other book buyers many times. Her case file is also available at Washington County. Anyone who has been harmed by these people physically or financially needs to be in touch with other victims. Please post your experiences.
