Bookselling roundup: Barnes & Noble ignites e-reader price war

Price war in e-book readers

Immediately after Barnes & Noble cut the price on its Nook electronic reader, Amazon shaved about $70 off the price of the Kindle e-book reader.

Is this going to affect sales of used books? Yes, I think it’s already affecting sales of fiction books (but these are usually the toughest to resell profitably, anyway. Aside from collectibles, that’s not a huge loss). The impact of e-books on nonfiction and reference books is negligible, so far. If and when Amazon cuts the price of the Kindle below $100, or offers a “free” Kindle for those who subscribe to a certain number of book purchases, this thing will have an impact.

These people say 20 percent of consumers will buy an e-reader this year. Right. And I’ve got a bridge I’d like to sell them.

From the NY Times:

Reacting to Barnes & Noble’s price cut on the Nook on Monday morning, Amazon.com has just dropped the price of its Kindle e-reader to $189, from $259.

That gives it a slight edge on the comparable $199 Nook (which also has a Wi-Fi connection), though Barnes & Noble also announced a $149 Wi-Fi-only Nook this morning as well.

Buyers can thank Steve Jobs and the briskly selling and more versatile iPad ($499 and up) for the furious price competition among e-readers.
