Q&A: Why is Amazon selling copies of my book at insane prices?

An author wants to know why her $12.99 book is being resold on Amazon Marketplace for $70:

Instead of maintaining a real inventory, these drop-shippers merely maintain a huge database of ISBNs, and automatically multiply the regular price for a book by a factor of three or more. You might wonder why anyone would buy a book at a hugely inflated price. Well, every one in a while, it happens. Sometimes Amazon’s site malfunctions, and only part of the listings are visible.

Has her book been out of print for a while (like a decade?) and her subject matter is unique enough to have entered the ‘rare and out of print’ market? You know some 1974 autos are just cars, and a few are 1974 T-Birds!

If this author has other copies, SHE can hawk them online for higher pricing, too. It’s not cheating. I can’t afford a first edition Stephen King, but I can afford a First of IT.
