Q&A: What’s the best guide to taxes for online sellers?

QUESTION: What is the very best book to guide us small book business owners in filing our taxes with the IRS? It would not have to be a book designed specifically for book sales, but anyone who is selling items from home. There must be such a book out there. Any ideas?

ANSWER: Here are two books I’ve read that I can recommend highly:

Taxes for Online Sellers by Simon Elisha

The eBay Seller’s Tax and Legal Answer Book by Cliff Ennico

The great thing about these two books is they’re written by real small-business people. They’re not just the run-of-the-mill “Dummies” books where just any anyone was hired to produce a book on the topic. So you’re getting your money’s worth. There may be some other good ones, but these are two I’ve read.

Plus, the money you spend on these guides is tax-deductible because the expense went toward helping you understand and prepare your tax return.

Another deductible tool is tax-preparation software like TurboTax and TaxCut. Using one of those programs can help you avoid hours of frustration in trying to decipher the IRS instructions. You can also file your return electronically, but I still prefer printing it out and mailing it in.
