Barnes & Noble red dot sale: 50 percent off & more

Barnes & Noble offers “thousands” of titles at 50 percent off and more. Sales is on now in the brick-and-mortar stores (look for books with the red dot) and online at bn.com. Just got the e-mail from B&N; advertising this. Looks like B&N; needs to raise more cash by the end of the month. Have seen some recent stories about B&N; cancelling some new bookstore openings. In many cases, those plans have been cancelled simply because the new shopping center project where the store was to be located has been killed, due to the problems in real estate.

I went to B&N; today and only came across 1 book that could be resold. Their 50% off is just 50% off the standard list price which could be pretty expensive to begin with. Have you had any luck buying remainders or with these clearance sales?

    Dear Adam,
Yeah, I have had some good luck at the Barnes and Noble sales, but not in recent years. Contrary to what Steve implies B&N; is not trying to raise quick cash before the end of the month. These sales are conducted in the summer and right after Christmas and have been going on since the late 90's. When B&N; first started these sales, they had a policy of offering to special order any book in print. So in addition to the assorted remainder books there were many unique and valuable titles – special orders that were rejected or never picked up. Now days, since B&N; has scaled way back on its special orders, it's mostly reduced remainders books that didn't sell well at full price or remainder prices. Online sellers would do well to avoid these, because there could be stock at all 500 B&N; stores. When that happens these titles become even more abundant on Amazon, etc. and the prices spiral downward from already low starting points. Bear in mind that after two or three weeks they go to 75% off, and then down to $2.00 each, and after a few more days they go to $1.00 and then poof they get donated to charity. The markdown from 75% to $2.00 then to $1.00 happens rather quickly in a matter of days, whereas the they stay at the 50% and 75% level for several weeks. Also bear in mind that your membership card gets you an extra 10% off at any level of markdown. Lately, I have had the best luck with Barnes and Noble reprints that they may be discontinuing (and thus added to this sale) Reprints are books B&N; have brought back into print. If you buy carefully you can find a few good titles to sell, but not as many as in years past.
