More Information on the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar In August, 2008 ABS hosted its thirtieth consecutive seminar at Colorado College, Colorado Springs, with a class of over fifty seminarians. Called by a recent reviewer “boot camp for booksellers” the seminar is a week-long program that focuses on the fundamentals of the book trade and emphasizes both bibliographical and business skills. Information on printing history, bookbinding, papermaking, and book production are punctuated with practical presentations on how to run a bookshop, researching rare books, writing book descriptions, pricing, creating a catalogue of books for sale, and suggestions on how to sell books to libraries and private collectors.
Over the past few years the Seminar has boosted its format to include in depth presentations on the technology for the book trade, internet bookselling, and marketing your bookshop on the internet. In addition, workshops are organized so seminarians learn by writing book descriptions, pricing books, using reference books, and examining bookbinding materials. There are also presentations on buying and selling at auctions, scouting, book fairs, creating consignment accounts, bookkeeping, and ethics of the book trade.
The faculty is made up of four former presidents of the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA), nationally known librarians from the University of Virginia, the Library of Congress, Colorado College, and Texas A & M University, and roster of noted booksellers from around the country. Information on the faculty and a schedule for 2009 can be found at the ABS website, www.bookseminars.com.
