Amazon blames 'glitch' for adult-themed controversy

Amazon blamed a “glitch” in its sales ranking feature for excluding adult and gay-themed books from bestseller lists over the past few days.

Over the weekend, adult or gay-oriented fiction and nonfiction books on Amazon were missing their customary sales rankings. The excluded books included Baldwin’s “Giovanni’s Room,” Vidal’s “The City and the Pillar” and Jeanette Winterson’s “Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit.”

The policy prompted critical remarks on Web sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
